Moving from OpenAI Prism · Export guide
How to export your Prism projects before January 1, 2027
62 days left to export your Prism projects
Prism deletes every project after it shuts down. Five steps make sure you keep your papers, figures and references.
Step 1
Export every project at once
In Prism, open Settings → Data Controls → Export all projects (zip). One ZIP holds a folder per project and, in some exports, a conversations folder with your chats as JSON files.
Step 2
Or export one project
Open the project, click its title, and choose Export (zip). This ZIP holds that project's LaTeX source, figures and bibliography.
Step 3
Keep a PDF of each paper
Open each project, let the latest preview finish, and download the PDF. It is your reference copy if a file turns out to be missing later.
Step 4
Check the ZIP
Unzip it and open each project folder: the .tex files, the .bib files and every figure should be there. If the ZIP contains export-errors.json, some files could not be exported: download those from Prism by hand before it closes.
Step 5
Store a backup
Keep the ZIP somewhere safe (a drive or cloud folder). After January 1, 2027 Prism deletes all project data and it cannot be recovered.
What the export does not include
- Real-time co-editing and your co-authors' access
- Project history and inline comments
- The Zotero connection
- Chats as usable conversations (they are JSON files for reference only)
- For shared projects you do not own: your chats with that project
Keep writing in the browser, with your co-authors
scime draft imports the Prism ZIP unchanged: every project, its figures and .bib files, and your chats as notes. It is free, with AI included, real-time co-authoring and Zotero. Invite your co-authors again in one step after the import.
Questions
When does Prism shut down?
January 1, 2027. OpenAI's notice says all Prism-related data is deleted after shutdown and cannot be recovered.
Where does OpenAI suggest moving?
OpenAI's migration guide shows how to open an exported project in Codex and work on it locally. If you write with co-authors in the browser, you need an online LaTeX editor instead.
Can I import the ZIP somewhere without unzipping it?
Yes. scime draft takes the Prism ZIP as it is, single project or all projects, and keeps your chats as Markdown notes next to the project they belong to.
What if my export has export-errors.json?
Some files could not be exported. Open the file to see which ones, then download them from the project in Prism while it is still open.
